U.S. Re Under40s Group – What’s happening? The past six months have been an exciting time for the U.S. Re Under 40s Group and the next couple of months should be just as exciting, if not more. In July we had our “Summer Mixer” at the Bourbon Street Bar and Grille in Midtown Manhattan and in December we had an educational event “Managing Capital in Today’s Insurance/Reinsurance Marketplace” where we had some of the top insurance and reinsurance executives answer some difficult questions directly from our group’s members. Next month, we will host a wine tasting and in a few months, we will host our second event in Philadelphia. We are very excited about these events and hope to see you at one or both events! In addition, our technology committee is currently updating our website to include a job board, which will be a great opportunity for all of our members. Further, we have created Outreach committees in Illinois and Texas, so be on the lookout for events there in the coming months. Social and Educational Committee Updates: · Recent Past Event...a “Summer Mixer” On Thursday, July 30th we held our Summer Networking Event at the Bourbon Street Bar and Grille in Midtown Manhattan. The event brought together over 70 insurance and reinsurance professionals for socializing, networking and of course, fabulous Hurricane drinks. The group was able to enjoy the seasonable weather on Bourbon Street’s private outdoor patio. The event proved to be a great opportunity to meet the recently-elected board members and was a terrific way to kick-off the new term. On behalf of the entire group, we would like to thank Marvin Orendain who provided us with a wonderful array of photographs to memorialize the event. Feel free to flip through photos of the event on our website. · Recent Past Event...“Managing Capital in Today’s Insurance/Reinsurance Marketplace” On December 1, 2009, the Re Under 40s Group hosted an interactive and engaging panel that discussed the current state of the market from a range of different perspectives. Speakers provided insight on today's financial landscape, the 2009 cat season, reinsurance capital/pricing/structures, "hot topics" in the industry, developments in the ILS and derivative risk markets, what to expect in 2010, and more. Over 100 young Insurance and Reinsurance professionals attended. A special thanks to our speakers: · Scott Belden, Senior Vice President & Chief Reinsurance Officer, Travelers Insurance · John Doucette, Executive Vice President & Head of Enterprise Risk Management, Everest Re Group · Mark Lyons, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Arch Insurance Group · Michael Millette, Partner/Managing Director of Structured Finance, Goldman Sachs · Stanislas Rouyer, Senior Vice President & Team Leader for Specialty Insurance Group, Moody's Investor Service · Steve Weisbart, Senior Vice President & Chief Economist, Insurance Information Institute Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank our guests and members who attended both of these events. Without you, we would not have had such wonderful turnouts. We greatly enjoyed having you and look forward to seeing you at future events! · Upcoming Event...“Wine Tasting “Preserving Liquid Assets” Our Social Committee is currently hard at work planning our next event, "Preserving Liquid Assets", which will include a wine tasting and presentation on Wednesday, February 10th at the offices of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP in New York. This will provide an exceptional opportunity to network and learn all about wine, from tasting to insuring it. In addition to wine tasting, we'll learn the key components of investment wine's value - the grapes, key regions and marketplace for investment grade wines. For more information and to register for this event, click here. We look forward to seeing you there! · Upcoming Event…”2nd Annual Philadelphia Re Under 40s Networking Event” The Philadelphia Outreach Committee is diligently planning our 2nd Annual Philadelphia networking event in the upcoming months. Please keep your eye open for more details! Outreach Committee Activities: · U.S. Re Under 40s is expanding across country – The Development of an Outreach Committee... The U.S. Re Under 40s Group has grown quickly over the past two years. All of our events had been held in New York City, however during the spring of 2009, with the help of our Pennsylvania-based board member, Jeff Winters, we hosted a successful networking event in Philadelphia. Over the past few months we have had a great deal of interest expressed from industry members across the U.S. to further expand the group’s mission into other locations. In response, we have developed the Outreach Committee. The committee's goal is to organize U.S. Re Under 40s events outside the New York City area to allow members from other parts of the country to get involved with the group. Initially we expect these cross-country events to be social in nature and hope that educational gatherings will soon follow. Currently the committee is comprised of three members: Ashley Hunter in Austin, TX, Amanda Lyons in Philadelphia, PA and Doug Trainor in Chicago, IL. Please let us know if you would like to help organize an event in your city by contacting Lizzie Nussbaum. Technology Committee Activities: · A Job Board – Coming Soon! The U.S. Re Under 40s Technology Team is creating an online Job Board for our members. We think it will be a great resource for our members, especially in this difficult financial climate. If you know of any job listings in the industry, please forward them to info@reunder40s.org. We'll let all of you know when we launch and will ask that you invite your human resources colleagues to advise us of job listings at that time. |
