Lloyd’s Non-Marine Under 30’s Group: 2009 Bermuda and US Study Tour

By Richard Schreeve

After much planning and preparation the Lloyd’s Non-Marine Under 30s Tour 2009 finally took off on the 3rd May 2009. First stop on the tour was Bermuda where we would be staying for 3 days before heading off to New York, Boston and finally Miami. To say that the ‘tourists’ were excited by the prospect of three days in Bermuda was an understatement, no one seemed to mind leaving the wet and windy weather of London for the brighter skies in Bermuda.

After a relaxing Sunday evening in Bermuda where we were hosted by BMS, Miller and Price Forbes & Partners, we commenced proceedings on the Monday morning with a presentation from Guy Carpenter and Marsh. This was an excellent introduction to insurance on the Island and highlighted the main differences / similarities with the London market – of course one of the most obvious difference is the dress code! After a short break for lunch we had meetings with Harbor Point and Ariel Re. Both meetings were very informative and provided some very interesting material for later discussions. After an extremely educational but tiring first day we were lucky to be able to have a few relaxing beers at Elbow Beach in the evening – it was a view and atmosphere that those of us from London are not used to after a days work!

Tuesday was again fully booked with meetings and we were privileged to have presentations from the Bermuda Monetary Authority, OIL and Renaissance Re before heading out for a harbour tour kindly provided by Renaissance Re. That evening we were hosted by the Bermuda Under 40s at the launch party for their new committee and newsletter. This was a great opportunity for the ‘tourists’ to catch up with some of those who had presented to us over the last couple of days and to relax over a few beers. The ‘networking’ continued until the early hours and it was with slightly heavy heads that we left early on Wednesday morning for New York where our next round of meetings were to be held.

The trip to Bermuda was a fantastic start to the two week tour and we are extremely grateful to all those who assisted in arranging, presenting or just joining us for a beer during our visit.

The full tour report will be available shortly and if anyone would like to receive a copy or to ask any further questions please contact Richard Shreeve (richardshreeve@priceforbes.com).
